About this work

Almost the whole canvas is black, except for a narrow rectangular opening low on the left that reveals a small courtyard sunk below the surrounding walls. Inside, an ochre-orange wall abuts a teal-green one at a sharp angle; in front sit stacked white storage crates, a covered shape on the ground, and a bare pale floor lit from an unseen source above.

The surrounding blackness is painted flat and matte, throwing all attention onto the small lit recess, built up with thick, blocky strokes of teal, ochre and white. The stark contrast between the engulfing dark and the confined pocket of color gives the scene a hushed, voyeuristic, mysterious quiet.
