About this work
Four hooded, cloaked figures in wide-brimmed hats carry tall staffs across a windswept mountain landscape, draped garments whipped into sharp, angular folds; a distant hilltop fortress rises against snow-capped peaks under a stormy sky. In the foreground a bearded man in a dark cloak recoils in alarm beside a table set with a jug, green apples, chili peppers, a knife and a nest of eggs among loose straw.
Cool indigo mountains and pale hoods contrast with the warm ochre straw and rust-red robe of the central figure. Forms are simplified into hard-edged, faceted planes that flatten the drapery into bold, stylized shapes, giving the wind and the figures' movement a sculptural force. The mood feels unsettled and theatrical.
