About this work
A city canal recedes toward a golden-domed cathedral, its water reflecting the buildings and sky in patches of blue and violet. Stone embankments with carved balustrades line both banks; on the left, trees in orange and green autumn foliage overhang a parked red car, while rows of townhouses and colonnaded facades continue along the right bank toward the domed skyline.
Thick, textured strokes of palette-knife impasto build up the foliage, water and stonework in a vivid mix of gold, rust, blue-violet and cream. Bright, warm daylight is rendered through dense, tactile paint rather than fine detail, giving the whole cityscape a lively, sun-warmed energy typical of a mild autumn afternoon.
