About this work
A steep white chalk cliff dominates the right side of the composition, its eroded rock face and grassy cap dropping to a wide, calm river or bay. Successive headlands recede along the shoreline into the distance, growing paler and flatter until they dissolve into a soft haze at the horizon.
Warm ochre and cream tones in the cliff face contrast with the cool blue-grey water and a pale, sun-bleached sky. Broad, smooth brushwork and subtle atmospheric perspective convey heat and distance, giving the view a vast, quietly contemplative stillness.
