About this work
Seen from a high rocky plateau with deeply ribbed, eroded chalky cliffs at left, the view opens onto a broad green valley below. Pale paths or dry streambeds wind down through the trees and meadows, converging toward the foreground, while low ridges and hazy blue mountains recede toward the horizon.
Muted olive greens, ochre and grey describe the cliffs and valley in smooth, carefully blended strokes, with the palette cooling and softening toward the distant hills. The overcast, hazy light and expansive, still composition give the landscape a quiet, contemplative sense of scale.
