About this work
A woman in a red-and-white folk costume stands at the edge of a riverbank, reaching up to tie colored ribbons onto the branches of a birch tree, following the traditional Russian custom performed at Semik and Pentecost (Troitsa); more ribbons already hang from the leaves above her, and wildflowers grow at her feet.
Warm reflected light from the water plays across the tree bark and her dress in soft pinks and golds, painted with fluid, visible brushwork against a looser, more atmospheric background. The quiet river, dappled light, and absorbed expression give the scene a hushed, contemplative calm.
