About this work
A nude male figure reclines diagonally across the upper half of the canvas, one arm folded behind his head, stretched out amid tall grass and yellow, orange and violet wildflowers. Below him a woman in a pale, loosely draped gown lies with eyes closed, her arms crossed over her chest, and a white dove stands in the flowers between the two sleeping figures.
The meadow crowds the entire surface, flattening depth into a dense tapestry of stems and blossoms rendered in ochre, olive and mustard against warm brown ground. Paint is built up thickly, almost as raised relief, with dark, incised contours defining the figures. The result is hushed and dreamlike, a quiet allegorical pause between the two reclining bodies.
