About this work
A cluster of pale, ruffled-collar figures crowds the left side, one clear round face emerging from a mass of soft, sketchy costumes and headdresses. To the right, separated by warm shadow, two women in ornate dress and feathered hats stand apart, one in rose pink holding a fan, the other in blue. All figures wear pale masks or mask-like faces typical of carnival costume.
Warm browns, dusty rose and cream dominate the left and background, while cooler blue accents pick out the right-hand figure. Paint is dragged and scumbled thinly over the surface, leaving faces and costumes only loosely resolved. The overall atmosphere is soft, hushed and theatrical, a masquerade glimpsed through warm shadow.
