About this work
A stemmed goblet etched with a miniature scene of a hooded figure and a boat stands on a striped cloth; smoke curling from its bowl condenses into a pale, mask-like face with heavy, closed eyes. The stem is built from intertwined wings and serpentine coils, and behind the glass a gondola's curved hull glides through a swirling grey haze.
Rendered entirely in dense cross-hatching and stippled line, the print builds form through grey, sepia and blue-green tonal washes rather than solid color. The fusion of glassware, smoke and a dreaming face, framed by a shadowy Venetian canal, gives the composition a hushed, hallucinatory stillness.
