About this work

On a pale tabletop against a near-black backdrop, an antique square lantern with a hinged glass door and domed cap stands beside a single whole egg, set against a near-black backdrop. Above the lantern the word "ФОНАРЬ" (lantern) is inscribed in red script, and beside the egg the word "ЯЙЦЕ" (egg) appears in the same hand, naming each object directly on the canvas.

Painted in a somber, near-monochrome palette of black, ochre and dull green, the lantern's metal is built up in thick, dragged impasto, while the egg is smoothed into soft gradations of white and gray. The red lettering breaks the dark stillness like a printed label, giving the still life a quietly enigmatic, conceptual character.
