About this work
Four ballet dancers stand shoulder to shoulder with their backs to the viewer, hair pinned up, arms draped loosely over one another in a relaxed line. Their practice clothes - a full skirt, blouses, and striped tights - are only loosely indicated, and the figures blur into one another at the edges, suggesting a quiet pause rather than active movement.
Soft mauve, grey, and dusty pink dominate the palette, worked in dry, smudged strokes of oil and pastel that leave forms half-resolved. Touches of pale yellow trace stray highlights along an arm or a hem, and the overall haze of color creates an intimate, hushed mood, as if caught in a private moment backstage.
