About this work
Two bearded men with huge staring eyes are lashed to a wooden ladder-frame that reads as a double cross, one gripping a rung overhead, the other raising a fist while a golden globe dangles at his hip. Red ropes coil around their bodies, and a hazy full moon and a silhouetted skyline of domes and towers float beneath them in the night.
Saturated cobalt and violet dominate the palette, set off by acid-green foliage-like patterning behind the figures and one man's crimson shirt. Thick, expressive brushwork and exaggerated, mask-like faces give the scene a feverish, hallucinatory charge, closer to visionary allegory than naturalistic painting.
