About this work
A seated man in a green frogged coat and pince-nez glasses rests his hand on a cane, while a woman in a rose-colored skirt stands behind him holding scissors near his hair. Nude women walk across the gravel path to either side, one approaching from the left, one departing toward a balustrade at right, as a small girl in blue and a dog watch from the far left, before ochre villas and cypress trees.
Warm terracotta walls, blue-green cypresses, and pale skin tones are rendered in a smooth, flat, almost storybook finish with crisp contours. The calm garden setting and studied poses lend an incongruous, theatrical stillness to what is clearly a staged retelling of the Samson and Delilah story.
