About this work
A muscular, shirtless warrior in a gold-studded loincloth and draped red cloak strides through a line of three armored companions, each in a crested bronze helmet, carrying a round shield with a serpent motif and a long spear. His back is turned to the viewer as he grips his cloak, while the flanking soldiers repeat in near-identical poses on either side.
The armored figures and central nude are rendered in sharply lit realism with deep bronze and red tones, while the background dissolves into a violent spray of orange, yellow, red and blue paint suggesting fire and smoke. The contrast between the sculpted bodies and the chaotic, splattered field creates a charged sense of impending battle.
