About this work
Two joined wooden panels each depict a haloed, curly-haired angel in flowing robes, rendered as flattened, icon-like figures. The left angel gestures with an open hand, one sleeve patterned in silver leaf; the right angel stands with a hand to the chest, holding a tall white lily against a background of stylized foliage.
The surface combines matte blue-grey underpainting with passages of raised, textured gilding in silver and gold, evoking the layered gesso and metal leaf of traditional icon painting. Soft ochre flesh tones contrast with the cool, patterned ground, and the flattened perspective and decorative patterning give the diptych a hushed, devotional stillness.
