About this work
A crowned woman in an ornate gold-and-red patterned robe stands in profile beside a fair-haired child in white and gold, who looks up at her. Four winged female figures in red and gold robes flank the pair, playing a violin, a flute and a tambourine, their large decorative wings patterned like stained glass. Pink roses, white lilies, purple iris and several birds, including a dove and a peacock-marked pair, fill the surrounding foliage against a blue sky and green hills.
Saturated reds and golds are built up with fine, icon-like patterning and flattened, decorative forms rather than deep modeling. The layered ornament, calm profile pose and abundance of flowers and birds create a serene, ceremonial atmosphere.
