Children in a forest

A group of young women and children stand among tall pine trunks: three girls in headscarves and folk-style dresses hold out cupped hands of blueberries toward a boy in a peaked cap, who pours the berries into a wooden bowl; a clay jug rests at their feet. To the right a girl in red spreads a cloth on the ground, and in a sunlit clearing behind the trees a distant figure in a red headscarf bends to pick more berries.

The forest is built from layered greens, deep pine shadow near the figures opening onto a brighter meadow beyond, punctuated by the girls' red and white garments and touches of blue trim. Light falls evenly across the clearing, brushwork is smooth and forms simplified with calm, rounded faces, giving the gathering scene a peaceful, communal, storybook atmosphere.
