About this work
A tugboat is seen close-up from the water, its dark hull and wheelhouse filling the middle of the composition and a thin mast rising against the sky. A low reddish boat or barge sits at the right, while indistinct dockside buildings and structures line the hazy horizon behind.
Muted greys, teal and ochre are laid over the exposed tan board in quick, dry, scratchy strokes that leave much of the support visible. The loose brushwork and soft, overcast light give the harbor scene a quiet, plein-air stillness.
