About this work
A continuous facade of townhouses in blue, pink, yellow and cream stretches across the canvas, their varied gables, cornices and window rows sketched against a pale grey sky. A domed pavilion anchors the left end of the row, while a dark stretch of water occupies the foreground, faintly streaked with reflected color.
The buildings are built up with soft pastel strokes over a loosely brushed oil ground, blurring architectural detail into an atmospheric haze. Muted, harmonious color and a hazy, even light give the embankment a quiet, faded charm.
