About this work

A broad river spans the composition, its grey water carrying ice floes and mirroring a white church with a blue dome on the far bank. Snow-covered houses line the shore behind it, while on the trampled near bank a teal rowboat rests beside wooden planks, a figure in a red cap seated at its stern.

The palette favors cool greys and muted ochres, warmed by soft pink and brown notes in the snow and reflections. Brushwork is loose and confident, laid wet-into-wet to describe ice, snow ridges, and rippling water. Flat, overcast light unifies the scene, giving the quiet winter riverbank a calm, contemplative stillness.
