About this work

Several tall, wind-bent trees with golden autumn foliage dominate a village yard, their trunks curving in unison as if swept by a strong breeze. Below them, single-storey cottages with pale blue-green walls and dark roofs stretch along the ground, their windows outlined in teal, with a woodpile stacked against one wall.

The sky is rendered in soft white and pale blue, its brushwork loose and broken, while the tree canopies are built from warm ochre and ivory dabs. Cooler greys and greens ground the cottages and yard below, and the overall handling is free and gestural, giving the scene a breezy, sunlit energy.
