About this work
A long, low-rise apartment building under construction stretches across the width of the canvas, its concrete frame exposed with unfinished window openings and scaffolding along the roofline. Bold red Cyrillic capitals spelling 'НЕВЫНОСИМАЯ РАДОСТЬ БЫТИЯ' run the length of the facade, above a low fence and a strip of yellow ground beneath a flat grey sky.
The palette is dominated by dull beige, grey and ochre concrete tones, broken only by the vivid red of the lettering and a band of muted yellow at the base. Flat, graphic handling and even light give the scene a documentary bleakness, while the bright text cuts across the drab architecture with a jarring, ironic emphasis.
