About this work
A cloaked rider in black sits astride a rearing dark horse at the center of a dense, low-rise skyline; the rider's outstretched hand holds a small balance scale, while surrounding tower blocks are rendered as grids of tiny windows, some cracked or crumbling, and a strip of blue sky with drifting clouds shows above the rooftops.
Worked in etching with muted mauve, brown and grey washes over fine cross-hatched ink, the picture reduces the city to a repetitive textile of tiny marks against the horse's smooth dark bulk; the restrained, monochrome-leaning palette and the single patch of blue sky give the image a quiet, foreboding stillness.
