About this work
A muscular Spartan warrior stands in a short chiton and sandals, gripping a dagger overhead in one hand while thrusting a round shield forward with the other. Behind him rears the head and neck of a winged horse, and a winged woman with one arm raised leans out under its mane, set against angular black and red silhouetted shapes suggesting shields or banners.
Rendered in pastel and charcoal on paper, the drawing relies on tonal grey modeling of the anatomy set against flat black silhouettes and a red-washed background, with only the cloak and ground picking up warm color. Heavy contouring and cross-hatched shading give the figures a sculptural solidity, while the flattened decorative backdrop lends the scene a theatrical, heroic charge.
