About this work
Pale marble tiers of Rome's Vittoriano monument dominate the scene, its staircases, columns and bronze quadriga groups seen across the piazza, with Trajan's Column and its statue at left. Behind it, ochre and rose rooftops, domes and towers recede past dark umbrella pines, with a stretch of lawn and forecourt in front.
Pastel is laid in soft, blended strokes of pale blue, chalky white and dusty pink, evoking the flattening glare of a Roman noon. Marble and sky merge into one luminous haze, and the loose, atmospheric handling gives the view a quiet, sun-bleached calm.
