About this work
A quay lined with tall Normandy houses - one in rose brick, others half-timbered under slate roofs - curves around the harbor, with a wooden bell tower and slate-covered chapel at its center. Sailboats with bare masts are moored along the stone edge, their hulls doubled in the still water below.
Pastel strokes in soft rose, ochre and slate blue build the facades, while the harbor water is rendered in broken touches of orange, turquoise and violet that scatter the reflected light. The loose, broken handling typical of plein-air work gives the old port a bright, tranquil calm.
