About this work
Two nude women occupy a shallow interior bathed in blue: one sits on a draped stool with her back to the viewer, holding a small brass jug and turning to glance over her shoulder, while the other stands facing forward, arms raised to gather her hair, a gold collar at her throat. At their feet sit a brass basin, ewers, and folded cloth on a stone floor.
A cool, almost monochrome blue wash covers walls, drapery, and floor alike, broken only by warm flesh tones and small notes of red, brass and green in the still-life objects. Loose, fluid brushwork softens the edges of the figures, giving the scene a hushed, early-morning stillness.
