About this work
A young woman lies asleep on a sofa heaped with rumpled orange, burgundy, gold and white bedding, her head tipped back on a pillow with roses tucked beside it. A pink lace wrap slips off one shoulder, a strand of pearls rests at her throat, and a lace-trimmed white cloth covers her lower body; gilt picture frames and a dark green curtain frame the scene behind her.
Warm golden light falls across her face and chest while the surrounding fabric is built up in loose, confident strokes of orange, wine-red and ochre. The finish is smooth and glossy on the skin, contrasted with the textured sheen of silk and lace, giving the scene a hushed, languid warmth.
