About this work
A nude woman lies on her back on a dark cloth, knees bent and raised, both arms crossed above her tilted head in a relaxed, sleep-like pose. A lute or mandolin rests near her hip and a single apple lies close to her bent knees, with scattered red fabric and pale leaves filling the shadowed space around her; the whole scene is bordered by a painted checkered frame.
Deep browns and blacks dominate the background, against which the pale, warmly lit body stands out in strong chiaroscuro. Brushwork on the figure is smooth and modeled, while the surrounding still-life elements are handled more loosely and darkly, creating an intimate, hushed mood close to a classical academic nude study.
