About this work
The composition crowds a small room around a bed where a girl lies as if asleep or dead. A bearded, long-haired figure at center reaches a hand toward her while an old bald mourner leans over weeping, and gaunt onlookers, including a child held in someone's arms, press in from the sides and background.
Worked entirely in dense black ink hatching and cross-hatching, the scene builds from deep shadow with only a sliver of light at right. Grotesquely elongated, hollow-eyed faces heighten the tension, giving the drawing a dark, feverish intensity.
