About this work
A man's face confronts the viewer head-on, eyes wide and staring, mouth set in a grim, open-lipped expression with teeth visible. Jagged, thorn-like black marks radiate from the top of the head like a crown, and deep red wash streaks down across the cheeks and beard, pooling and dripping toward the bottom edge of the sheet.
Harsh black ink defines the features in jagged, urgent strokes, while blood-red wash bleeds and drips over the white paper, heightening the sense of suffering. The rough, spattered handling and stark contrast of black, red and white give the image a raw, dramatic force.
