About this work
A young woman's face surfaces from a dense field of impasto color, her features softened almost to the point of disappearing into the surrounding paint. Loose floral shapes and vertical drips of crimson and ochre spread around her, blurring the boundary between portrait and pure abstraction.
Built up in thick ridges and knife-applied strokes, the surface glows with lilac, magenta, pale yellow and touches of blue, catching light unevenly across its heavy texture. The handling is loose and gestural, closer to abstract mark-making than traditional portraiture, producing a hazy, half-remembered impression rather than a fixed likeness.
