About this work
A nude woman stands at left holding a golden apple, her gaze meeting the viewer's, while a nude man at right is shown from behind, his hand reaching toward her. Between them a jagged black gap splits a mottled gold-and-ochre panel covered in Church Slavonic text quoting the Book of Genesis on the temptation and the eating of the fruit.
Warm flesh tones are rendered with careful academic modeling against a rough, weathered gold ground textured to resemble aged parchment or fresco. The dark fissure between the two panels heightens the sense of separation and consequence, giving the scene a solemn, symbolic gravity rather than an idyllic garden mood.
