About this work
A head turned in three-quarter view fills most of the sheet, one hand brought up to touch the mouth or chin in a pensive, closed gesture. Behind and above the head, tight vertical pen strokes build up a dense mass suggesting hair or shadow, while looser scribbles trail off toward the upper right corner.
Short, repeated hatch marks model the cheek and jaw with a rough, granular texture, contrasted against a nearly blank lower half of the sheet. The tight clustering of lines around the head against the open space below gives the study an inward, brooding quiet.
