About this work

The crucified figure hangs with arms stretched along the crossbar, head bowed beneath a woven crown of thorns, blood tracing down the forehead. A cloth is knotted at the hips, and the body's ribs and abdominal muscles are sharply modeled by a single strong light source from the front.

The dark green-blue background is thinly scumbled and almost featureless, throwing the warmly lit flesh into sharp relief. Thick, textured strokes build the torso's anatomy while the cross itself stays in deep shadow, producing a somber, devotional mood centered entirely on physical suffering.
