About this work
A vast golden brocade cloth sweeps across the canvas, framing a red-backed icon of a woman with closed eyes and a wreath of roses, a small bird at her shoulder, with whole and split pomegranates scattered below. Around this centerpiece float separate vignettes: two winged cherubs, a man in a striped hat and red coat within a stone archway, and a musician in a tall black hat holding a stringed instrument, set against castle towers, a birdcage, a fruit tree, and a night sky with a full moon.
Warm gold and deep red dominate the foreground, giving way to cool blue-black night tones at the edges. Crisp outlines, flat gold ground, and dense ornamental pattern create a decorative, dreamlike surface.
