About this work
A close, frontal portrait study depicts an elderly man's head and shoulders, his hair a mass of wiry, wind-blown curls and his face framed by a full, flowing beard. Deep creases line his forehead and cheeks, and his eyes hold a steady, searching gaze directed just past the viewer.
Rendered entirely in grey and black on plain paper, the drawing builds volume through dense cross-hatching in the beard and looser, swirling lines in the hair. Sharper, more controlled marks define the eyes and wrinkled skin, giving the face strong presence against the loosely scribbled surrounding hair.
