About this work
An elderly woman's face fills the sheet, framed by a dark hood or shawl pulled close around her head. Deep furrows cross her brow, her eyes are hollowed and fixed, and her mouth hangs slightly open, baring a few teeth, giving the head an expression of anguish or shock.
Worked entirely in reddish-brown sanguine chalk on cream paper, the drawing builds form through dense hatching and rubbed tone, leaving the paper's white ground to carry the brightest highlights on the cheekbones and chin. Heavy dark strokes model the hood and shadow the eye sockets, producing a stark contrast that makes the face read as intensely emotional.
