About this work
A wide, panoramic composition gathers dozens of figures across a rocky, sunlit bluff beneath a heavy, dark storm sky. Riders on pale horses hold flags and banners at left and centre, a knight in plate armour stands among the crowd, and groups of men, women and children sit, stand, kneel and confer across the terrain, some carrying spears, swords or trumpets.
The picture is painted with extreme photographic precision, every fold of cloth, muscle and cloud rendered in sharp, even light against the brooding sky. Warm flesh tones and pale stone contrast with the near-black clouds above, and the even focus across the crowd gives the scene a staged, cinematic clarity and a tense, epic weight.
