About this work
Six men in worn olive fatigues stand shoulder to shoulder on a ledge of rubble and broken stone. The foremost, hatless, holds his hat and wears a red star; behind him another clutches a ribboned book to his chest. Jagged cliffs and a huge red sun fill the horizon.
Warm ochre and olive tones model the figures against a deep orange-to-crimson sky, the sun rendered as a flat glowing disc. Strong side light carves solemn, still faces; smooth academic modeling of skin and cloth meets a rough, textured foreground, giving the scene a heavy, dramatic mood.
