About this work
Two barefoot women stand pressed close together beneath a rough stone archway, one in an olive mantle and rust-red robe, the other wrapped head to foot in black. Between their joined hands they hold and gaze down at a pale, rounded bundle - the head of a swaddled infant - the only fully lit form in the composition.
Deep tenebrism reduces the setting to a few illuminated planes: the infant's face, the women's hands, and slivers of cheekbone and drapery emerging from near-total darkness. Thick, warm ochre and umber pigment is built up in broad folds, while the black ground swallows the rest of the canvas, producing a hushed, devotional intensity.
