About this work

Sharp, layered rock formations rise steeply on the left, their striated faces textured with moss and lichen, while waves surge and break against the base in bursts of white foam. The sea occupies most of the composition, its turquoise and deep green water churned into curling crests, with a pale strip of shore visible in the lower corner.

Heavy impasto applied with a palette knife builds the rock surfaces in ridged strokes of grey, ochre and green, while the water is worked in swirling strokes of teal, emerald and white. The contrast between the solid, weathered stone and the restless, foaming sea gives the scene a forceful, dramatic energy.
