About this work

A tall silver-toned metal ewer with a curved spout and an earthenware jug with a painted band stand on a table beside a metal tray heaped with pears, grapes, a peach, a lemon, and a pomegranate half; a peach lies apart on the patterned cloth below, and a length of pale fabric hangs suspended above, catching a bright shaft of light.

Deep grey-blue shadow fills most of the background, against which the lit cloth glows almost white and the ewer casts a long, distorted shadow on the wall. Rich, dark greens and browns surround pockets of warm yellow and red fruit, painted with dense, textured strokes; the strong contrast of light and shadow gives the composition a hushed, dramatic intensity.
