About this work
A squat dark-glazed jug and a small copper kettle with an arched handle sit side by side on a heavily folded crimson cloth. Two yellow-green pears lean against the jug, and four orange tangerines are scattered before the kettle, one placed low in the foreground shadow.
Deep maroon and black dominate the background and drapery, streaked with visible knife and brush marks that catch stray highlights. The copper vessel is picked out in warm gold and olive tones, while the fruit's bright orange and ochre provide the only saturated color notes. The overall effect is somber and dramatic, lit as if by a single low, warm light source.
