About this work

Two rounded, dark flower heads, read as sunflowers past bloom, sit toward the upper left and lower center of the canvas, their dense seed-disc surfaces rendered in near-black brown against a wide, empty field of pale cream. No stems, leaves or petals are clearly visible, leaving the heads to read as heavy, isolated masses.

The dark discs are built from thick, worked impasto in brown, black and ochre, flecked with small touches of white and lavender, while the surrounding ground is scumbled in soft cream and grey with faint drips running downward. The heavy, brooding masses against the light field give the picture a somber, weighted mood, unlike a typical bright sunflower study.
