About this work

Set in an almost black, densely scratched interior, a bright white vertical form dominates the middle of the composition, its ridged, antler- or ear-like branches suggesting a hare or game animal above a dark table or ledge. Deep maroon and orange masses gather around its base, with pools of blue and white pigment pooling below like spilled cloth or liquid.

The picture is built almost entirely in thick, gestural applications of paint over a dark ground, with white built up in ridges and the surrounding field scumbled in near-black greens, browns and purples. Red is used sparingly but pointedly, reading like traces of blood against the pale central shape, giving the still life a somber, unsettled charge.
