About this work

A heavy bank of dark storm clouds fills most of the composition, pressing down on a low skyline of a riverside or lakeside city. A cathedral dome is visible at left and church spires at right, their walls catching a warm golden light against the gathering gloom, with pale reflections streaking the water below.

Thick, heavily loaded impasto builds the clouds and the textured facades, applied with a palette knife or loaded brush in slashing, vertical strokes. The contrast between the cool gray-violet sky and the hot ochre and amber light on the buildings creates a tense, dramatic mood, as if the storm is about to break.
