About this work
A cluttered kitchen still life gathers a round-bellied teapot, a glass oil lamp with a tall chimney, a pierced tin cheese grater, a wicker-wrapped bottle and a small cup on a rough wooden shelf. To the upper right hangs a carved or dried object with a single eye and ridged surface, suggestive of a bird or fish strung by a loop of cord.
Worked in soft pencil-like lithographic tone, the print models every object with careful gradations of grey, from the polished sheen of the teapot to the woven texture of the wicker. The quiet, cluttered grouping and muted light give the scene an unhurried, domestic calm.
