About this work
Several textile lengths, each covered in a different bold pattern of scrolling leaves, flowers and geometric shapes in red, green, purple and blue, hang folded over a horizontal rod; a small squat blue ceramic vessel with a curved spout sits balanced on top, and a larger patterned cloth is pinned to the wall behind, while the right side of the canvas opens onto a bare cream-colored wall.
Flat, clearly bounded color shapes define the fabric patterns, contrasted with softly modeled, naturalistic rendering of the ceramic pitcher's rounded volumes. The composition balances a dense, kaleidoscopic left half against the calm emptiness of the wall on the right, giving the still life a lively, decorative rhythm.
