About this work
A young shepherd lies asleep on the ground beneath a leafy tree, head resting on his hand, a red cloth bunched beneath him. A clay jug, bread and a cloth bundle sit near his crook. Around him a dense flock of sheep and dark goats stands and grazes, their heads turned toward the sleeping figure, with a calm lake and rolling hills stretching behind.
Warm earth tones of brown and ochre dominate the animals and ground, set against the cooler greens and blues of the distant water and sky. Soft, diffused light falls across the foreground while the background fades into hazy distance, and smooth academic brushwork renders the wool and foliage with fine detail, producing a peaceful, pastoral calm.
